Common Audio Interfaces: Gain a New Understanding of Your Audio Equipment Ports

Today I’d like to introduce some common audio interfaces, so you can have a clearer idea about the ports on your audio devices.

First, let’s go over the two major categories of audio signal interfaces to lay a foundation for understanding specific types.Audio signal interfaces can be divided into:

l By signal type: analog audio interfaces and digital audio interfaces

l By wiring method: balanced interfaces and unbalanced interfaces

Analog audio interfaces transmit sound in analog form.Common ones include TRS, XLR, and RCA.However, they are prone to signal distortion.

Digital audio interfaces process audio signals digitally.Common types include AES/EBU, S/PDIF, coaxial, and optical interfaces, which can better restore the original signal.

Balanced vs. Unbalanced Interfaces

Balanced interfaces, such as TRS and XLR, can cancel out interference and deliver high-quality analog signals.

Unbalanced interfaces, such as TS and RCA, have weak noise immunity and are prone to noise.

Introduction to Common Audio Interfaces

TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve / 6.35mm stereo jack) Wear-resistant, widely used in high-end audio equipment.

1/8" TRS (3.5mm jack, commonly known as “mini TRS”) This is a standard audio interface for sound cards, used by most consumer sound cards (including onboard sound cards).It is typically used to connect audio devices such as computers and mobile phones.

TS (Tip-Sleeve) Commonly used for instrument cables.

XLR (Canon connector) Ensures a secure connection, widely used for microphones and other professional equipment.

XLR (Canon Connector) XLR consists of a 3-pin male plug and a locking female socket.Thanks to the locking mechanism, XLR provides a highly secure connection.It is commonly used for microphones, audio processors, effects units and other connections.

Professional speakers and audio processing equipment from Theater Voice are usually equipped with XLR interfaces.

RCA (Lotus Connector) Transmits audio signals; a pair of cables is used for stereo sound.

PS: For stereo RCA audio interfaces, the right channel is usually marked in red, and the left channel in blue or white.

AES/EBU Interface

Commonly used in professional equipment, it can transmit digital audio signals in balanced or unbalanced mode.

PS: Although standard XLR connectors look almost identical to AES/EBU interfaces, they are not recommended for digital signal transmission.AES/EBU digital XLR cables with an impedance of 100 ohms are required to connect the pre-stage and post-stage equipment.

S/PDIF includes coaxial and optical interfaces, which can ensure the quality of digital audio signals.

PS: Both coaxial digital interfaces and optical interfaces fall into the category of S/PDIF interfaces.

Digital coaxial interfaces include RCA and BNC types, commonly found in devices such as digital mixing consoles.

Optical (TOSLINK) interface transmits digital signals via light pulses, featuring high bandwidth and low signal attenuation.It should not be bent during use.

 

 

 

 

MIDI interface

Used for connecting recording equipment to computers, for music arrangement, recording, etc.
